Have you asked yourself what the difference is between laminate and LVT? Aren’t they basically the same thing? What is the difference….if any? Hopefully a few of those questions are answered here!
First off, the similarities: Both laminate and LVT are a more affordable option over ceramic or hardwood. They also have many options of color that imitate natural surfaces like wood, ceramic or stone. They are easier to maintain and clean. Both offer the option to be geared toward the DIY installation but can be easily installed by a professional. They both have wear layers and allow for a damaged plank or tile to be replaced.
Now to the differences: Of course they are made from different materials. Laminate is made up of layers of high-density fiberboard. LVT is made up of layers of PVC Vinyl. They are also installed differently. Laminate is a floating floor system that isn’t glued or nailed down. LVT does offer some options of being installed in a floating floor style but is mainly glued down. They also feel different. Laminate will feel more like wood since that is the main component and LVT will feel more like plastic since it is made from vinyl. Laminate is highly stain resistant and also resistant to limited heat exposure (think fireplace ember). LVT can be susceptible to staining and be damaged by limited heat exposure. LVT tends to be more water resistant that laminate but more waterproof laminate options are becoming more available.
